eating in a deficit but keep gaining weight

as the title suggests, i’ve been eating in a deficit for 2 weeks but my weight has plateaued at first and now it just keeps increasing. i’ve gained alm 1kg in two weeks and i’m really confused and frustrated tbh. :(

stats: 21f 5’2” around 140lbs now

i’m tracking my calories quite diligently on the lose it app & i average about 1500-1700 cals per day, plus i also exercise 5-6 times a week.

could it be water retention or something? i would be really upset if i actually gained fat, but logically i think it’s quite unlikely bc even if i was eating slightly more than i tracked, i should still be around maintenance.

any advice would be appreciated!! can ask me if more details r needed too. tia!!

Finally coming out of a deep depression, but gaining weight quickly. 31/M/6’5”

Hello everyone!

For reference, I’m a 6’5” 31-year-old man.

I spent the last year in a very deep depression. My weight around April was 260, but as my mental state worsened, I lost about 20 pounds. I couldn’t even bring myself to eat. Everything seemed like a chore. I thought I was never going to get better, but finally a change in medication in mid-December started to pull me up from off the cliff.

With that said, I’ve noticed that I’m binging often, and in egregious ways. For example, just a half an hour before I typed out this post, I took a few pieces of bread and lathered butter on top. It was so thick, I may as well have been biting into cheese. Then, I took out my remaining ice cream, added all the chocolate syrup and peanut butter syrup I had remaining, and finished the ice cream as well. Plus, I go through about 8-10 cans of soda in a day.

My weight is now 285, and fast approaching 290. I will talk to my doctor next time I see her, as I’m sure this is a side effect of the medication. However, I don’t want to stop taking it. I never thought I’d feel alright again, and side effects seem trivial in comparison to where my mind was at.

So, questions for the community: How do you deal with weight gain caused by medication? Is there a sure fire way I can convince myself to stop binging? It’s like I’m not even present when I’m eating.

I went on a long hike today, so it’s not like I’ve given up everything pertaining to fitness, but for every good decision I make for my health, my brain seems to make three bad ones in return.

Does your taste for sweet foods change as you abstain from them?

I don't know why but I've really been into sweets lately. I don't eat them often but it's been a huge leap ever since I became vegetarian and then later dietary vegan. I used to rarely eat cookies but now I can't keep them in the house. It's become a habit of me to eat a few cookies a day, which is a lot when I have a low calorie deficit anyway.

I've been trying to substitute for fruits instead. Fruits are nature's candy, right? It should work in theory but fruit satiate a different craving than cake. I find grapes better as a chip substitute. I'm allergic to raw fruit so I usually buy fruit cups and canned fruit. It's a lot fewer calories if I splurge on fruit then on Oreo's, but...

I'm wondering if my tastes will change over time. Has anyone here substituted fruits with other foods? Do you crave fruit more than the substitutes now?

What should my goal be?

What do you think a good goal weight should be for a 21 yr old female who is 5'4", 30% body fat, and 135lbs?

I started at 163lbs, and over the last 8 months got down to 135lbs. Pretty slow progress now as i lose about 1-2 lbs a month, but it's very sustainable for me

I like the way I look when I pose, but if I'm caught off guard I notice rolls when I sit down and how big my arms are. I'd like to not have that insecurity anymore. I was thinking I want to be 125lbs, but I'm curious what other people who are my size goals are?

After almost being 400 lbs

I 32m at 5'9 decided that it was enough in January. And in these 3 weeks i went from 385 to 370. Hope to see a 2 on the scale before the end of the year.

I try to reduce my fast food intake to twice a month coming from (Not even kidding) 2-3 times a day for the last 4 months or so... And at the end i just didn't notice anymore how much "shit" i ate. It's insane how well the body can adapt. But i'm also glad i've ended it like i did. There are still some missteps when it comes to me overeating, mostly bread with cheese but i'm seriously doing way better. Not just physically but also mentally.

I ate a lot of fast food after 2 weeks of NOT eating that unhealthy mess i normally ate before January. I've been having diarrhea the whole evening and this last one 5 minutes ago was so violent and foul that i'm quite sure my body is now clenched and drained from any bad stuff in there.

It is incredible how much just at least TRYING to watch what you eat does for you.

Depression while losing weight? Anyone else?

So I’m well into my weight loss now and taking it very seriously. But although I’m very happy with my progress (about to change my flair) I guess all the feelings I was suppressing by emotionally eating are coming to surface? Like I can’t busy myself with food and sweets now, so I find myself feeling sad and sometimes just plain melancholy. It’s odd, I didn’t expect this. Anyone else experience this?

Hungry all the time on 2100 calories?

I’m trying to lose those last five pounds after having my second baby about eight months ago. I managed to do this after my first was born three years ago, before getting pregnant again. Right now I’m focusing on eating 150g protein per day while trying to keep calories around 21000/day. I strength train 2x/week and either run or row for a third weekly workout. My issue is that I’m constantly hungry. Maybe it’s all the extra running around with little kids? Or the reduced sleep (not awful, but not ideal)? It’s really hard to keep disciplined for longer than a week or so. Any thoughts appreciated.
