Should I diet break as planned or keep on going?

I started to diet with /r/MacroFactor on Jan 1. My original plan was to cycle my dieting by eating at a deficit for 5w and then eating at maintenance for 2w. My reasoning is that I have way to far to go to just try to lose it all in one go without burning out. Diet breaks would have the following advantages:

  1. Psychological break from eating at a deficit.
  2. Gives me a third option between a deficit and a surplus.
  3. Gives me practice in keeping off the weight.

I've lost almos 6lbs over almost 5w so far. I'm coming up on the 5w mark this weekend. Now I'm doubting the wisdom of the plan and want to keep my momentum and just keep going. But I also don't want to wait until I'm burnt out before diet breaking but would rather prevent burnout before it happens. I don't want to lose momentum but also want to make sure my weight loss is sustainable long-term. What do you all think?

Something clicked … weight loss has never been so easy

To give some context before I get into this, I was recently diagnosed with PCOS and Hashimoto’s Disease. TLDR; insulin resistance and unbalanced thyroid hormones and androgens. That, combined with Binge Eating Disorder, got me to a high of 340 lbs at the start of this year. All of this weight gain was through late high school and early college (I’m 21, so think the past 5 years max). Before this, I was a “healthy” weight but struggled with anorexia, resulting from physical and sexual abuse from when I was a kid dealing with food (I’m in therapy).

I’m not saying it’s all my hormonal imbalances and trauma, but after I got medicated recently and was in therapy and was just maintaining, I decided to drastically change. I’ve been so scared of anorexia after I was hospitalized as a young teen that I’ve been afraid of diets and CICO and intermittent fasting and all of it. I decided that, even if I swung back in that direction, it would be healthier than the path I’m on. Right now, I have no health complications from my weight, but fear it in the future.

I was already doing okay in some areas (no sugary drinks, no red meat [related to my hormonal disorders]) but I struggled with the time in which I ate. I’d eat nothing until 10 PM at night, then binge until midnight. I knew I had BED, but it didn’t seem real or felt like something I could control.

I started researching. Boy, was I wrong. It was controlling my entire life, but my new knowledge was a weapon to fight it with. I started eating 2-3 meals a day (look, smaller and more frequent meals is my goal, but it’s only been about 3 weeks). I felt this TERRIBLE gripping pain at night even when I ate enough during the day. Previously, this would cause me to binge, worrying I was neglecting my bodily cues. This time, I didn’t - I wondered if it was, in fact, psychological pain from the BED manifesting physically. I fought through it and went to bed, and was pain-free by morning. Now I don’t eat past 8PM, and am trying to move it earlier.

I’m learning the real battle is that I can’t trust my bodily cues. All the fitness people I follow say to trust your body, but I think I’m in a unique place where I can’t. Every day that passes though, I’m in less pain. I originally stopped eating late because I thought it was making my existing hormone issues worse, but it’s like I uncovered a hydra of bad habits to fight.

And huzzah! I’m down to 321, as of today. Almost 20 lbs down in three weeks is crazy, but I’m eating at least 1200 calories a day (I use MyFitnessPal to track). I eat very balanced meals, as eating 1200 of something junk food related makes me want to binge more. In line with the diet protocols for my hormonal disorders, I reduce as much sugar as possible, low carbs, low processed foods, no red meat, but high salt for my POTS (doesn’t impact weight, just salt needs). I’ve been eating a lot of eggs and avocados, lol.

I don’t find myself too hungry in general anymore, except at night when the familiar pains return. It’s getting better though, and I’m proud to say I haven’t broken and binged even once. But even if I do, I feel more prepared to get back on the horse! I will say, while I’m 321, I find my body type closer in pictures of people who are 230-250, but I’m also very tall and broad (?).

If you struggle with BED, you’re not alone. Recognize your patterns and don’t let your brain lie to your body. I’ll be checking in here as I continue. I haven’t taken a before picture, unsure if I want to. Any thoughts, feedback, comments etc appreciated!

EDIT to mention: I also did this partially out of anger. My new GP said that, with my conditions, I need to do “vegetarian keto” combined with IF to lose weight. I want to prove her wrong. 💪

One of my classes got me thinking...

quick about me: I'm 25F and am about 310lbs, which is down -15 from the last time i weighed myself a couple weeks ago. I'm getting my MFA in writing, and we're talking about personal goals other than creative writing to engage with so we don't burn ourselves out. And my automatic thought was "losing weight" since that had been my focus for ... well ever.

But it made me start thinking... I've wasted so much time making myself feel like shit about my weight. I've always been heavy, 200ish pounds for on puberty onward, gained 75 in college, gained 45lbs once i was put on mirtazapine (this was a whole thing, i posted about it last week being very upset because I wass unaware it was an appetite stimulate, though I obviously had some very unhealthy habits, and a very unhealthy relationship with food in general so it wasn't just the medications fault, but it certainly didn't help)... and i'm just... Tired? I'm tired of making myself feel like shit because of my weight. I think my overall personal goal should shift to wellness in general. Build a better relationship with food (with my registered dietitian, because the last time I even thought about nutrition, the food pyramid was a thing and i thought doing an 800 calorie/day diet was acceptable), exercising in ways that make my body feel good and get me moving and mobile, going to therapy to deal with my anxiety and depression and grief (from loosing my mom in 2017 - big emotional eating trigger), like... I don't want my life to be surrounded with the constant need to lose weight. I want wellness, obviously health is a big part of this. A healthier me will be achieved by losing weight - I won't have to worry about my A1C (which is 5.6, pre-diabetic) and i'm sure my bad knee will thank me... but I think it's another large part is healing mentally I need to do that will start helping me feel better, you know?

I dunno, maybe I've been seeing too many #bossbabeinspo stuff that belong embroidered on a pillow. I just think my "lose it" journey is more about losing the weight, but the unhealthy mindset as well. and i really wish I had recognized that earlier, but... better late than never, right?

Boss commented on my weight.

Boss is in town and asked me to go out for drinks and dinner tonight. Walking into the restaurant, asks me if I've ever considered gastric bypass. I said no uncomfortably...and she refused to let the topic go. Finally, told her that I wasn't comfortable discussing my weight with her. She apologized and the rest of the dinner was super awkward.

I'm on the fence of saying to hell with my current diet, or quiting. Neither of these things would be beneficial for me.

Why do people think that they can just negatively comment on peoples physical appearance? I would never walk up to someone and ask them if they've ever considered a nose job.I've lost almost 20 lbs so far and am dreading when I get to the point where my loss is noticeable.

30 Day Accountability Challenge - Day 1

Hello everyone!

Happy day 1 to everyone. I hope your day one was gentle & victorious. Let’s get to it!

Log before I eat everything: Nailed it today.

1800 – 2000 calories a day: Looking like 1975 today with a quick week night chili for dinner. I need to be a little more mindful of my protein on the day to day. Next week’s meal prep shall be protein rich!

Exercise five days a week: 30 minute walk & some punching drills. 1/1 days.

Journal for two minutes before playing my Switch: Got it today. 1/1 days.

Read & respond to at least 3 comments a day on this post: Off to get after it! Y’all keep me inspired everyday.

Today's gratitude list: Today, I'm grateful for seeing coyote or fox tracks in the snow. Seems like the furry canine had a successful hunt last night.

Random self-care action I want to conquer today: Full skin care routine, gotta refine some pores.

Your turn lovely community members! How was your day 1?

I had to get a different size Tux fitted.

My father is getting married again, and I was originally fitted for a rental tux a month ago. The wedding is two weeks out now. I went back to get my fit checked because I have lost weight since I was originally fitted. My shirt, jacket, and pants all fell by a whole size. 🤯

I've never worn anything this small in my adult life, and my brain was having a really hard time processing how I actually looked in the mirror with the smaller test jacket on.

I've still got another 50lbs to loose to hit my ideal weight, but it was nice to get some positive external reinforcement that I actually have physically changed.

Why have I lost no weight or an insignificant amount of weight despite working out and hardly eating for a month?

I mentioned this in my other question, but that wasn't the main topic. I don't know how much I weigh or how much I weighed then since the scales are playing up (which was what I asked about), but I look about the same as I did a month ago. I don't have that much weight to lose (I'd say 10 or at most 20 pounds), so surely I should have noticed something by now. I mean I'm not a sumo wrestler or anything, I've just got a bit of a belly. I heard you could lose 10 pounds in 4-6 weeks so surely I should've seen a big difference already, but I've not noticed anything much.
