Being fat because you don't exercise, vs. not exercising because you're fat

When I was younger, I used to love swimming, hiking, softball, all kinds of stuff. I ended up shooting to ~200 by 9th grade and more later on for various reasons. I stopped doing any activity where my face would turn red, I would sweat, or I'd show off too much of myself. Today, I have a lot of issues moving socially-- I hold my breath when I walk so nobody hears me, I never walk in groups of my friends, etc.

My therapist pointed out to me that I don't actually hate exercise, but my body image issues get in the way of it. When someone asks me if I'm coming to swim, I never say no because I don't want to, I say no because I don't want to show anything or be weird and swim in clothes.

Just a perspective I thought I'd share. :-) It made me feel a lot more open to exercise and finding things I can do privately.

[NSFW] I REACHED (and surpassed) FIRST GOAL WEIGHT!

This morning I stepped on the scale and it read 163.8lbs. I didn't cry, but dammit, I was close.

Background: I've had three kids and gained and lost weight between each pregnancy, but after baby number 3, I realllllly gained. AFTER having him. Heck, I gained 20lbs after weaning him, actually. In August, I stepped on the scale and saw 205.6lbs. The only time I had been heavier was at 9 months pregnant. I decided right then that I needed to smarten up, and at least not continue gaining. I made the decision to stop taking second helpings and stop snacking.

By the end of October I had lost 10lbs and figured now that the back to school buzz was over I had no excuses to not buckle down and start CICO as I had a few times in the past. I started at 1530kcal per day, eating much the same, just smaller portions and no longer drinking my calories (other than my morning coffee, of course) once I lost 15 more pounds I felt comfortable lowering my calorie intake to 1200 per day, which forced me to start making healthy alternative-type changes to my diet (sugar to Swerve, rice to riced cauliflower, bun to lettuce wraps, etc). Once I got to around 175 things really slowed down, as expected. I had some hard days. Some days I went over 1200, but always made sure to stay under my maintenance calories.

I have not worked out for even a minute yet on this journey, which was half to prove that weight-loss has very little to do with physical activity and half because I loathe exercise. But that stops now! I promised myself back in October that once I got to my first GW of 165 I'd start working out, at least until UGW of 140lbs. So, wish me luck on that. And I'm happy to hear any tips and tricks on exercising when you hate it.

If you read this far, thank you and sorry for the novel.

Here's a collage I spent way too long on: http://imgur.com/a/LFf78Zu

Just two things that really helped me on my journey - Hoping it might help someone else

Hello people,

Thought I'd share what has helped me overcome a few issues on my weight loss journey but before I start I'll give you a quick run down of the progress so far. When I started I was 17 .7 Stone (247lbs) and after falling off many bandwagons and being annoyed and disappointed with myself I kept going - I now weigh 12.6 Stone (176lbs) and this means I am at a healthy weight for a 25 year old 6'1 male.

First thing's first I got my diet in place, this is the easy part - the issue, like so many other people have was sticking to it for a longer period of time. A few days in and everything is going great and then I'd find myself with an empty pizza box or diving into a tub of ice cream at the weekend. Then comes the self hatred as I convince myself everything was for nothing and 'I'll never shift this weight'. Rinse and repeat.

The biggest thing that helped me was being realistic with myself. This was massive. If I was going to a party I wasn't going to set myself up for disappointment by trying to convince myself 'I'll only have 1 or 2 drinks'. FORGET THAT. I was there to enjoy myself and enjoy myself I shall - I'll eat and drink as much as I want and have a great time doing so. I won't feel great the next day but that's part of it - I'll go again. Being realistic with myself meant I could enjoy things like Christmas, Birthdays and other plans a lot more - In a way it meant I was no longer afraid of screwing up completely.

Secondly, I was never one to take progress pictures because I was embarrassed of what I saw in the mirror but I regret not taking a before picture. One day I got my shirt off and took a picture. Done. That easy. I told myself 'in two weeks time I'm going to take another one'. I was so damn motivated to look my best I could for the next picture it was unreal, I was a man on a mission. All of a sudden it was so much easier to turn down chocolates and fast food because 'That won't make me look good in two weeks time'. Then in two weeks time I'd take another one and go again. Seriously, try it. Set yourself mini goals, it's a marathon not a sprint after all.

I still reward myself, I mean just last night after my latest progress pic I ordered a pizza. Only this time it's not like the other times, I don't sit here calling myself a failure and neither should you. Enjoy it like you're meant to. There is so much more I want to say but I don't want to bore you.

You can do it, I am rooting for you.

Did any of you have skin or nerve problems when overweight?

I’ve been dealing with some rather uncomfortable skin and nerve problems over the years. I can remember having them as young as early high school (I’m 30 now) but it’s when I started drinking regularly and putting on weight that they became much worse.

I’m now very sensitive to touch and temperature and have uncomfortable sensations such as tingling often. My skin (especially my scalp) gets dry and itchy very easily. I am also sensitive to pain. For example if I scratch an itch on my arm it causes a deep ache. All this makes me very anxious of my surroundings. It makes taking showers, getting changed ect. uncomfortable.

I suspect being overweight may be a factor...but who knows. I have quit drinking and seen very little improvement in my symptoms. I have seen multiple doctors but they all just blame it on anxiety.

Can anyone relate to what I’m experiencing?

Girls laughed at me at the gym today

I have been going to the gym for the last few weeks to lose weight, improve my fitness and appearance, hopefully be able to run the london half marathon, find a girlfriend and wear some nicer clothes.

It wasn't quite busy, and I went on the treadmill, I was doing 5 mph at 15% incline for 10 mins, then 10mph at 0 % incline for 10 mins. I realised at the high speed I was on the 1 noisy machine (makes noise when I run), and as I increased the speed from 5 to 10, I started to make alot of noise. As there were not a great number of people, I just continued.

A few minutes in two girls came in and went on the machines behind me, I saw them (using the mirror) pointing at me, laughing, and recording me (probably for snap chat) . I just did 5 minutes, and left as I was embarrassed. If I was normal sized, this would not have happened. With valentines coming up, I realised my weight is the reason I'm probably alone.

I'm thinking about quiting the gym, and just cutting down on calories. Sorry if this isn't the right place, just needed to get it off my chest.

Tell me I'll be ok !

Sorry english is not my language :)

I was so proud of me.

CICO, 30 pounds gone, my scale was my best friend, I couldn't believe my new weight. I could picture myself losing more. For the first time in my life, I felt I had what it took to reach my goal : - 80 pounds.

But last monday, I came down with the flu, and I'm still healing today.

For the first day, i was so sick, it was easy to CICO :) but then, it got a little easier, and I came back to a logic I thought I had left behind. I thought I deserved to let go. Because I was sick, because I was tired, because I needed care. So I stopped logging into MFP, i ordered in. I had chocolate biscuits. I'm not logging my calories, but I still count them in my head. I'm been over 1000 kcl of my target for 3 days.

And I feel like I'm never going to be able to go back to my losing mood. I feel like i lost all of my motivation. I'm afraid to weight myself. I feel like 2020 is already down the drain. I know it's my fat anxiety talking, i also know that it's easier to give up.

So I need your help : please share your tips to get back on track, kick my butt, tell me i can do it please !

I'm very grateful for all of you
